Originally from Wicklow, Michael Riordan is a Bristol-based composer, sound engineer and guitarist. He is a graduate of the Masters in Music and Media Technologies programme at Trinity College Dublin, where his thesis examined virtual reality as a tool for sound synthesis. His music has been played by Cormac O'hAodáin, Chatham Saxophone Quartet, Adam Marks, Kate Ellis, Lisa Dowdall and Daniel Bodwell. He has collaborated with visual artist AlanJames Burns on a number of installations with an emphasis on interactive technology.
Michael's music explores ideas of agency, discipline, and gradual process. His music often draws inspiration from the instruments for which it is composed, using their distinguishing features as first principles from which to develop a full piece. He has a particular interest in interactivity and generative music.
Michael is currently the Broadcast Officer of the ICC.
