Flautists Lina Andonovska and Meadhbh O’Rourke will perform six new works on 7 December 2018 at St Finian’s Church. New works for solo flute, flute duo, flute and electronics, and flute and kick drum have been written by ICC composers Kevin Free, Daniel McDermott, Elaine Nolan, Ben Mchugh, Bill McGrath, and Alan O’Raghallaigh.
Lina Andonovska (flute) leads a diverse career as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, collaborator and educator. Quickly gaining recognition internationally as a fearless and versatile artist, she has collaborated and performed with Crash Ensemble (Ireland), Deutsches Kammerorchester (Germany), Australian Chamber Orchestra, Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), s t a r g a z e, Southern Cross Soloists (Aus), Ulysses Ensemble (EU) and eighth blackbird (USA). She is critically acclaimed for her interpretation of new music, having worked with Louis Andriessen, Brett Dean, Ann Cleare, Donnacha Dennehy, Michael Gordon, David Lang, Bryce Dessner, Thomas Ades, Anthony Pateras and Nick Roth. Rolling Stone Magazine hailed her performance of Bun-Ching Lam’s piccolo concertino at the Bang On A Can Summer Festival as “superbly played, (ranging) from sustained ‘somebody-please-get-that-tea-kettle’ squeaks to the flit and flutter of its beautifully lilting trills...”
In 2015/2016 she completed a two-month Asialink Residency bringing contemporary classical repertoire to audiences in Timor-Leste as well as collaborating with local musicians. Prior to this she was musician in residence with Crash Ensemble, Ireland’s foremost contemporary music ensemble. In 2013 she was awarded the prestigious Freedman Fellowship and with it commissioned a new work for flute and electronics by Australian composer Anthony Pateras.She has been artist in residence on three occasions at the Banff Centre (Canada).
As an orchestral player she has worked with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (UK), Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria; Guest Principal Flute with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and in 2012 she was co-principal flute of the Southbank Sinfonia (UK). As soloist she has performed concerti with the Southbank Sinfonia, Orchestra Victoria, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and most recently the Deutsches Kammerorchester (Berlin).
Recent performance credits include the German premiere of Dean’s flute concerto ‘Siduri Dances’ with the Deutsches Kammerorchester, recitals at the Tokyo Experimental Festival, and guest appearances with s t a r g a z e at the Edinburgh International Festival. In the 2018/2019 season, she will be joining the Southern Cross Soloists (AU), performing the latest opera by Dennehy/Walsh with Crash Ensemble at the Barbican (London) and Dutch National Opera (Amsterdam), performances as Principal Piccolo with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and a solo recital as part of Berlin’s Unerhörte Musik series. In 2019, she will be giving the world premiere of a new solo work written for her by Donnacha Dennehy with the assistance of the Arts Council of Ireland Commission Award at Musica Nova, Helsinki.
The Irish Composers’ Collective is a non-profit collective of young and/or emerging Irish composers. ICC’s main aim is to further the professional development of composers by producing regular concerts of new music by its members. ICC members are given the opportunity to work closely with professional performers over a period of months in the lead up to a concert.
Meadhbh O’Rourke studied at DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama with Ciarán O’Connell for two years before completing her BMus degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, studying with Katherine Bryan (Principal RSNO), Helen Brew (Associate Principal RSNO), Janet Richardson (Principal Piccolo, RSNO) and Ruth Morley (Red Note Ensemble). She is a winner of both the Junior and Senior Flute competitions at the ESB Feis Ceoil. In 2015 she was chosen as one of four finalists from Ireland for the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Brass and Woodwind Scholarships. In both 2017 and 2018 she won the Hope Scott Trust Award to attend Irish Youth Baroque Orchestra 2017 and Grolloo Flute Summer School 2018 (Netherlands). Meadhbh has worked with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and participated in the RTE Symphony Orchestra Mentoring Scheme in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons as well as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s Side-by-Side scheme 2018. As soloist, Meadhbh has performed with the DIT Symphony Orchestra and the Irish Youth Baroque Orchestra.
