Peter Moran, founder of Gamelan Nua, presents a free talk in the National Concert Hall on Gamelan Instruments. Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. The most common instruments used are metallophones played by mallets and a set of hand-played drums called kendhang which register the beat.
Along with the talk, performers will give demonstrations and attendees will be able to play with the instruments themselves.
Peter Moran received his music degree from University College Dublin and his MA and PhD from the University of York. He has been playing Javanese gamelan for over 13 years. His PhD research included seven new compositions for gamelan and a minor thesis on the subject of notating contemporary music for gamelan. His gamelan compositions have been performed in England, Ireland and Indonesia.
He is the founder and director of numerous gamelan groups in Dublin, including the UCD Gamelan Orchestra, the experimental composers' ensemble Gamelan Nua, and most importantly, the National Concert Hall Gamelan Orchestra, which was received as a gift from Sultan Hamengkubuwono X of Yogyakarta, Java. In September, Dr. Moran will be representing Ireland at the World Congress of Indonesianists in Bali.
Awards and commissions for his composition work include the Carl von Ossietzky Composition Prize, the Walter Becket Cup, and the Per Cent for Arts Commission. From 2012-2015, he was the secretary of the Association of Irish Composers. He is also the founder and editor of the AIC New Music Journal, and co-curator of the Listen At Arthurs concert series in Dublin, which he established in 2016. When not composing or gamelaning, he can be found playing in folk music sessions in his local pubs.www.petermoranmusic.com
