Steve started to play violin at age 3. A few years later he began studying violin at the RCM in Chatham Row, Dublin, with Nell Kane. In 1982 Steve met ‘The Edge’ at a bus stop and went on to record ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ and tour with U2.
Around the same time, Steve was a founding member of In Tua Nua which featured Sinead O Connor as one of the vocalists and signed to Island records. In 1985 following some recording sessions in London, Steve was asked to join the Waterboys and he then went on to make many records with them including the seminal ‘This is the Sea’ and ‘Fisherman’s Blues’ and more recently ‘An Appointment with Mr Yeats’.
Steve is a much respected session fiddler and has recorded with Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Sinead O Connor, World Party, Declan O Rourke among many others. He continues to be an integral part of ‘the Waterboys’ and is a founder member of Sligo band ‘NoCrows’ with whom he records and tours with regularly.
Steve also regularly performs with the Sligo Baroque Orchestra and has recently completed a commission composing music for the orchestra and African ensemble Musica Tropicana. This work was performed during the Cairde Sligo Arts festival and will hopefully be recorded later this year (2014).
