Shell Dooley is a contemporary composer from Kildare. Dooley’s work ranges from solo piano to electroacoustic pieces, with a particular love of new and unusual sound worlds and textures that convey emotions and stories. Her use of guitars in her pieces and her fusion of acoustic instruments with electronically processed atmospheres are a feature of most of her work.
Following studying Music Technology at NUI Maynooth, Shell went on to complete her M.Phil in Music Composition with Donnacha Dennehy and Linda Buckley in Trinity College Dublin. She has also studied piano performance with the London College of Music and the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She is guitarist for various music ensembles.
Dooley has since composed music for A Night in Dublin Film Festival, Luxembourg’s Lucilin Ensemble, RTE’s Vanbrugh Quartet, Kirkos Ensemble and Elm Quartet. She was chosen for Art Saves Lives’ Celebration of Female Artists with her pieces “Constance” and “Laura” and went on to compose music for their Mental Health Awareness campaign in 2015. Shell has had pieces featured in ICC Takeover and InSight #3 Slipdraft in Smock Alley Theatre as part of the Irish Composer's Collective. Her string quartet 'Hotel del Salto' was one of the winners of the West Cork Chamber Music Festival Composition Competition in 2016.
Shell is one half of ambient/post-rock composition duo Variant Sea, who have released two critically acclaimed records.
